From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Fishermen drove hundreds of dolphins toward shore on an island in southern Japan, causing the death of more than 100 of the mammals, a fisheries official said. He said dozens of fishermen drove the dolphins toward Fukuejima, hoping to kill some for food. But hundreds became trapped by the receding tide and at least 100 died on the sand, the official said. Dolphins are taken annually by local people because fish and meat are expensive in the isolated community, Kyodo News Service reported.
