I am writing to express my opposition to your editorial stance against Prop. 132, the Marine Resources Initiative (Oct. 12).
Prop. 132 is not a “special-interest group” issue. More than 1 million Californians signed petitions to get the initiative on the ballot.
By banning the gill and trammel nets within three miles of our coastline, Prop. 132 will slow the needless waste of marine life that has been taking place here for years. Texas, Indiana (where it borders Lake Michigan) and New Zealand have already banned these killer nets.
Prop. 132 provides compensation for the commercial netter who may lose income. This is a fair and sensible idea.
