CERRITOS — Los Alamitos High School decided to go with its running game to defeat El Dorado, 16-0, Thursday at Gahr High School.
The victory assured Los Alamitos (6-4, 3-2 in the Empire League) of a playoff berth as the league’s third-place team.
LaQuon Beckton, who scored on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter, gained 117 of the Griffins’ 249 yards rushing in 22 carries. Andrew Fuentes added 113 yards in 14 carries.
Quarterback John Collins, who scored Los Alamitos’ first touchdown on a 13-yard run at the end of the first quarter, completed six of 14 passes for 84 yards. Three of his passes were intercepted, two by Jim Beck.
El Dorado (2-8, 1-4) was held to 117 yards rushing and 79 passing. Bryan Warner, who gained 74 yards in 16 carries, also had two receptions for nine yards.
Two first-quarter interceptions cost the Golden Hawks scoring opportunities, and the second set up Collins’ touchdown.
El Dorado reached the Los Alamitos’ 12-yard line in six plays after the opening kickoff, but lost the ball on Josh Beeney’s interception of a Jason Bluth pass. El Dorado regained possession two plays later on Beck’s interception. Seven plays later, a Bluth pass was picked off by Scott Cronin at Los Alamitos’ 44 with 3:46 left in the quarter.
