The Shoe Now Fits, So Elway Will Play

DENVER — Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway has pronounced himself healthy enough to start against San Diego on Sunday, although he probably will be shabbily dressed.
Elway will play with a hole in his shoe.
The quarterback sprained his left big toe and strained his left arch against Minnesota last week. To accommodate a splint on Elway’s foot, team trainers have cut a hole the size of a golf ball near the top of his left shoe. They will try to find a way to protect the foot, either with tape or a bigger shoe.
