Nation IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : Atlanta Sets Curfew, Stirs Rights Protest

Civil libertarians objected to Atlanta’s curfew for minors, under which repeat offenders’ parents could be jailed for 60 days or fined $1,000. Mayor Maynard Jackson said the ordinance would help police keep youngsters out of trouble, but Michael Hauptman of the American Civil Liberties Union called it unconstitutional. “(If) we receive any complaints . . . it is our intent to take this matter into court,” Hauptman said. FBI statistics show Atlanta had the highest rate of serious crime in 1989.
