Harwell Hamilton Harris; Architect Specialized in Private Homes

Harwell Hamilton Harris, 87, an architect credited with combining the contemporary concepts of efficiency with the natural ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright. Among his well-known designs is the home of Weston Havens in Berkeley, Calif., overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, which in 1956 was voted by the American Institute of Architects as one of America’s most important buildings. Harris, who taught at Columbia, Yale and Minnesota universities and at USC, specialized in private homes. But he also designed public buildings in Minnesota and New York. In Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday of cancer.
