COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Women End Losing Streak at 40 Games

The Cypress College women’s basketball team ended a 40-game losing streak with a 70-53 victory over Oxnard Friday in the consolation round of the Cypress Tournament.
Joanna Costello scored 22 points and had eight rebounds for Cypress, which last won on Dec. 7, 1988, against Glendale. The Chargers lost the final eight games of the 1988-89 season, were 0-26 last season and started this season with six losses.
Jackie Boxley scored 14, Chris Bazzel 12 and Heidi Sorour 11 for Cypress, which had lost to Oxnard, 63-62, in a nonconference game a week ago.
In the state volleyball championships:
Golden West 3, Sacramento City 0--Joli Eberhart, Tania Grasselli and Kysha Green had 10 kills each for Golden West (22-3) in the 15-6, 15-1, 15-4 sweep in the first round of Sacramento (17-1).
In the OCC men’s tournament:
Long Beach 78, Orange Coast 73--OCC led by as many as 17 points in the first half before Long Beach rallied for the victory. OCC plays Mt. San Jacinto at 5:30 today for third place. Long Beach plays LA Valley at 7:30 p.m. for the championship.
In the Cypress women’s tournament:
Orange Coast 78, American River 73--Erika Manning scored 27 points for OCC, which moved into the final at 4 p.m. today.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Saddleback 91, Compton 88--Matt Thompson scored 20 points and had 18 rebounds for host Saddleback.
