All’s Well on Aiken

“A Wee Bit of Scotland on the Westside” (by Patricia Bennett, Nov. 11) was an absolute joy to read. I have lived in these hills of Cheviot for 35 years. My children grew up here; they were married here; my grandchildren only know “the house on Aiken Avenue” was their grandparents’ home, and I have written a column (Cheviot Beat) for the West Los Angeles Independent for the past 25 years.

Cheviot Hills is a rarity . . . one of the last of the “neighborhoods” left in Los Angeles. Where else do you think that since I’ve been a widow one neighbor would continue to bring up my trash barrels every week and another would bring my Los Angeles Times up the steps to the front door on a daily basis? In what other area could I walk to the drugstore, the cleaners, the children’s book store and the jewelers and be greeted with a warm and neighborly, “Hello Mrs. Schwartz”?
