Garnes Picks Up 26 Points as Aztecs Defeat Gauchos

Kieishsha Garnes scored a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds as San Diego State defeated UC Santa Barbara, 76-71, in a women’s nonconference basketball game at Peterson Gym.
The Aztecs (4-3) trailed 35-34 at half, but shot 55% in the second half and never trailed after taking a 36-35 lead. SDSU’s Melanie Usher had 13 points, Crystal Lee added 12 and Tameka McGlawn chipped in 10.
Lisa Crosskey led UCSB (2-2) with 23 points.
Point Loma Nazarene College was outrebounded by 19 and lost to Northwest Nazarene College, 73-62, in the opening round of the Golden Rule Tournament in Boise, Idaho. Shannon Abrams led PLNC (6-3) with 20 points, and Becky Wilson added 11.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Point Loma Nazarene College led host Cal State Dominguez Hills at halftime by four points, but wound up losing 55-54 in a nonconference game. Rusty Fallin led PLNC (4-3) with 13, Donnie Buettner had 12 and Mark Bulgin added 11.
VOLLEYBALL
Poway High’s Heather Collins and Helix High’s Karrie Downey of Helix were named to Volleyball Monthly’s second team All-America squad.
