Fontana Plant Gets Huge Pipe Order: Bechtel Corp. of San Francisco, project manager for a $1.2-billion expansion of a pipeline designed to transport Canadian natural gas to the West Coast, has placed orders for 400,000 tons of pipe worth about $400 million. The orders were placed with Napa Pipe Corp., a subsidiary of Oregon Steel Mills, and Ipsco Inc. of Regina, Saskatchewan. Oregon Steel said all steel plate for its 650-mile portion would be produced at its 160-employee plant in Fontana. The 845-mile expansion, scheduled to be built in 1992 and 1993, will nearly double the existing capacity of pipeline facilities owned by Pacific Gas Transmission Co. and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.
