Thomas Advances at Surf Contest

Marty Thomas, formerly of Seal Beach, won his quarterfinal heat Monday at the Billabong Pro surfing competition at Sunset Beach, Hawaii.
Thomas, who now lives in Sunset Beach, Hawaii, and Derek Ho of Waimanalo, Hawaii, were the only Americans advancing through the quarterfinals. Richie Collins of Newport Beach was eliminated in the quarterfinals along with world-champion Tom Curren of Santa Barbara.
