Lowery’s 31 Help Loyola Beat Marist

Guard Terrell Lowery scored 31 points, including the go-ahead basket with 58 seconds left, to lift Loyola Marymount to an 84-80 victory over winless Marist Thursday night at Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Loyola Marymount (7-4) trailed, 78-75, with 4:38 left before scoring seven consecutive points, four by John O’Connell, to take an 82-78 lead with nine seconds to go.

Dexter Dunbar drove the length of the court to score with four seconds left and pull Marist (0-7) to within two points. Lowery was then fouled on the inbounds pass and made two free throws for the game’s final points.

“We played very hard all game long, and when you do that you can make things happen, “ Loyola Coach Jay Hillock said.

“We missed too many free throws during the game, but we clutched up at the end, and any time you get a win on the road you have to be happy.”

Marist trailed, 75-66, with 8:26 left before going on a 12-0 run, including four points each by Rod Henderson and Izett Buchanan.

In the first half, Marist held leads of up to 11 points and led at halftime, 43-42.

Buchanan led Marist with 26 points.

“We may have been somewhat road weary,” Hillock said. “We flew all day New Year’s Day to get here.”
