A San Diego bank robber suspected of being the “Brawny Bandit” was sentenced this week to 10 years in federal prison.

Joseph Craig Oliver was also ordered to repay two banks to which he pleaded guilty of robbing.

Assistant U.S. Atty. Alana Wong said tellers described the bank robber as “beefy,” hence his nickname, which was coined by the FBI during the series.

After his arrest last summer, Oliver confessed to committing 10 bank robberies, Wong said.

U.S. District Judge Gordon Thompson Jr. ordered Oliver on Monday to repay $1,024 taken from the Bank of America in Ocean Beach on June 6, and $599 stolen from a Bank of America in Chula Vista on May 3.

Wong said Oliver pleaded guilty to the two Bank of America heists in an agreement that he would not be charged with the other hold-ups.
