Echo Park : Move of Historic Barn OKd

A man who is restoring a historic Victorian house and a 104-year-old carriage barn has received permission to move the barn to the front edge of his property, and to build an apartment in the hayloft.
Property owner Larry Layne, 41, had threatened to demolish the barn if the city of Los Angeles would not allow him to move it. It is located at the end of a long driveway where it occupies too much of the property’s back yard, Layne said.
In May, the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission refused Layne’s request. The commission came into play because the house and the carriage barn are a city historic-cultural monument and because Angeleno Heights, a neighborhood near Echo Park, is a historic preservation zone. Layne appealed the ruling to the city Planning Department, and last week the Planning Commission unanimously approved the relocation.
Although relieved to have his permits, Lane said he is irritated that the process took so long.
“To me it seemed like a reasonable restoration request,” he said.
