Gnatcatcher Status Focus of 2 Hearings

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday announced it will hold two public hearings next month on whether the California gnatcatcher should be protected as an endangered species.
The first hearing will be held on Feb. 25 at the Hyatt Regency Alicante in Garden Grove, from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. The second hearing will be held Feb. 27 at the San Diego Convention Center, during the same hours.
In September, the wildlife service announced that it was proposing to list the small songbird, which lives in sagebrush found in Orange, San Diego and western Riverside counties, as a national endangered species.
