International Boxing Federation officials ordered a rematch between champion James Toney and Dave Tiberi within 90 days because of the disparity in scoring of Saturday’s middleweight title bout at Atlantic City, N.J. Toney won a 12-round split decision to retain his title. One judge scored the fight 115-111 for Toney, another had it 115-112 for Toney, but a third had Tiberi winning, 117-111.
“Under ordinary circumstances, we don’t encourage rematches,” IBF President Robert Lee said. “But we felt someone was short changed here.”
