PREP ROUNDUP : Santa Margarita Girls Clinch Tie for League Title by Beating Mater Dei
- Share via
Tara Moss scored on a short baseline jumper with 14 seconds left to give Santa Margarita a 47-46 victory over Mater Dei in a key Angelus League girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at Santa Margarita.
Santa Margarita (15-8, 7-1 in league) increased its league lead to two games over Mater Dei (9-11, 5-3) with two games remaining. Moss led the Eagles with 21 points.
Moss’ basket came after Mater Dei had taken a 46-45 lead on Alicia Harrell’s 18-footer with 30 seconds left. Santa Margarita used a timeout, then worked the ball patiently before Moss drove from the right wing and made an open six-footer.
Mater Dei then called time, but the Monarchs were unable to get a shot off before time expired.
Mater Dei rallied from a 21-18 halftime deficit to take a 35-31 lead early in the fourth quarter behind forward Dawn Gawronski, who scored 16 of her team-high 18 points in the second half.
