DESERT TECH: Gilbert P. Hyatt, who made his fortune with the single-chip microcomputer patent, was probably the wealthiest resident of tiny La Palma. But no more. Hyatt, who recently signed deals with six Japanese electronics firms (D6), has moved to Las Vegas. Not that Hyatt is a gambler. . . . “I gamble on technology, and to me, that’s a sure thing,” Hyatt says. “Las Vegas is a free-trade zone, which makes it attractive for exporting.” Industry observers estimate his patents are worth $100 million-plus.
