Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Cheney Ties Cuts to Military Firings

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Defense Secretary Dick Cheney said he would have to fire an additional 300,000 service personnel next year if a proposed $15-billion defense cut in Congress passes. Cheney said the firings, more than 15% of the present 1.94 million troops, would be in addition to the 236,000 troops already planned for separation. The House is to vote possibly today on the $15-billion cut. “The only way you get savings of this magnitude in a short period of time” is such firings, Cheney said.
