Aztecs’ Rally Topples Cal Poly Pomona

Three San Diego State players picked up two hits apiece in the Aztecs 7-4 nonconference victory against Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday at Smith Field.
SDSU scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Cal Poly Pomona committed four errors to the Aztecs’ one.
Rich Juarez scored two runs, drove in a run and doubled, Steve Dietz scored one run, had an RBI and doubled and Tony Robertson scored once and knocked in a run for SDSU (11-5).
Benji Grigsby (4-0) came on in the eighth and was the winner. Cal Poly Pomona fell to 3-12.
UC Irvine scored nine runs in the first three innings then buried host University of San Diego with eight runs in the seventh en route to an 18-4 victory at Cunningham Stadium. The Anteaters had 16 hits off five USD pitchers. The Toreros committed five errors in dropping to 6-8. Irvine improved to 9-7.
Local television stations will broadcast 101 Padres games in 1992, beginning with a March 8 exhibition game against the Angels (12:05 p.m. PST) from Yuma on KUSI TV, Channel 51. KUSI will air 51 games, 48 of them regular-season road games. The San Diego Cable Sports Network will carry 50 home games on a pay-per-view basis.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
SDSU was swept at No. 4 Cal State Northridge, 15-10, 15-8, 15-8, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match. The Aztecs, who got 13 kills from Rob Thomas, 12 from John Hyden, fell to 5-13, 1-8.
In a South Coast Conference community college game, Grossmont was extended to five games, but pulled out the 15-8, 11-15, 15-7, 12-15, 17-15 victory against Mt. Sac. Grossmont’s John Shirk had 15 kills.
Grossmont (3-3) will host Long Beach City College (7-0), the top-ranked community college team in the state, Saturday night at Grossmont. Lincoln High standout Ala Mikaele, now plays for Long Beach City College.
