WASHINGTON — President Bush signed into law on Monday a bill to allow gambling on American cruise ships.
Sponsors in Congress said the intent is to make U.S.-flag cruise ships more competitive with foreign-flag ships that offer gambling.
The measure eliminates federal prohibitions against gambling on cruise liners operating outside the three-mile, state-waters limit. Gambling will be allowed, provided that it is not the main purpose of the cruise.
