The Ladycats, who were undefeated last season in league and have won 12 consecutive league games, are expected to repeat as champions. Eleven starters return, including league MVP Samantha Cardenas, who played shortstop. Cardenas, who had a batting average of .442 and fielding average of .927, will rotate at that position with senior Angela Hanes. All-league player Andrea Schuette, who posted an earned-run average of 0.78 and a fielding average of .945 last season, also returns. Most of the team has been together for two years. “The fact that they’ve been playing together is a strength,” said Caperton, who returns for her seventh season. “The team is also strong on defense and aggressiveness. They are not afraid to take the extra base or draw the throw.” Caperton said she doesn’t expect her team to be especially quick. “We’re not a fast team, but I think we’ll make ourselves fast by creating opportunities. If we can play defense and keep the other team’s run production down, we’ll do OK.”
