COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Wins Again With Late-Inning Heroics

Second baseman Ricky Parra’s throwing error allowed pinch-runners Bryan Smith and Joe Aguirre to score the tying and winning runs with two outs in the ninth as host Golden West continued its late-inning heroics with a 7-6 victory over East Los Angeles in a nonconference baseball game Saturday.
On the play, Harvey Perez hit a grounder to Parra, whose throw was in the dirt and skipped past first baseman Gabe Molina. The Rustlers (9-8-1) won in their last at-bat for the fifth time. It also was the eighth time Golden West has won after trailing or being tied after seven innings.
John Arnold had a RBI triple and Marty Osborne singled in Arnold during the five-run ninth inning.
The game began as a pitching duel. East Los Angeles’ Robert Tamayo had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings until Matt Logan singled to left. Paul Newfield had a no-hitter through five innings, but was relieved by Brett Osborn after being charged with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Parra had two doubles for the Huskies (14-5).
In Orange Empire Conference baseball:
Rancho Santiago 5, Cypress 2--J.J. Thobe pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and two walks for visiting Rancho Santiago (13-6-1, 6-2-1). Aaron Butler had three hits, two RBIs and one run scored for the Dons. Cypress is 13-10, 2-7.
In Orange Empire Conference baseball:
Riverside 11, Orange Coast 3--Gus Castro allowed three hits in 7 2/3 innings for visiting Riverside to earn the victory. Ben Munoz had a pinch-hit three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth for host Orange Coast (9-5, 3-4).
Saddleback 3, Fullerton 2--Chris Sauritch homered with two on in the first and Tom Waterman pitched a five-hitter over 7 2/3 innings for the host Gauchos (9-6-2, 5-3-1).
In nonconference softball:
Saddleback Sweeps--Saddleback’s Alison Barry had three hits and two RBIs and Sara Roberts (6-2) allowed nine hits to earn a 6-0 victory over San Bernardino. Shelley Byrd had three hits and three RBIs and Jennifer Jordan (6-3) pitched a three-hitter for Saddleback (12-5) in an 11-0 victory over Cerritos.
In the consolation round of the Golden West softball tournament:
Glendale (Ariz.) 6, Cypress 0--Cypress committed five errors and was eliminated from the tournament. Priscilla Sarmiento doubled for the Chargers (18-6).
In the North-South All-Star men’s basketball game:
South 134, North 131--Saddleback College guard Ray Ankton had eight points and three assists as the South withstood a late North rally at San Jose State.
