In a recent TV appearance for which he performed “Like a Rolling Stone,” Dylan displayed a clear disdain for how an icon is expected to act. Instead of singing the classic song as we remember it, Dylan sang off-key and off-tempo; in typical Dylan fashion, he performed on his own terms.
As the single most important American songwriter of this century, Dylan’s refusal to be anybody’s hero is the ultimate testament to his greatness.
