A 5-year-old Carson boy who was struck by a random bullet as he was walking with his mother and two smaller brothers last week died Tuesday after six days on a life-support machine.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, who said that the fatal bullet could have come from anywhere within a two-mile radius, have not been able to discover who fired the shot that hit Adrian Benitez last Wednesday.
His mother, Martha Benitez, 27, said the boy had started to run when he saw his father coming home in his car. He suddenly yelled out “Ay, Mommy,” clutched his head and collapsed, his mother said. No one heard the shot.
Homicide detectives are asking anyone with information about what might have happened within two miles of 246th Street and Island Avenue about 8 p.m. March 11 to contact them.
