SAN DIEGO : Council Urges Park to Honor Dr. Seuss

The San Diego City Council voted Monday to ask the San Diego Unified Port District to consider joining the city in a joint venture to build a park at the foot of Broadway to honor the late author Theodor Seuss Geisel, creator of the Dr. Seuss children’s books.
Under the city’s proposal, a 9.5-acre park would be built at the site of the old Lane Field on Broadway, between Pacific Highway and Harbor Drive. Most of the area is now a parking lot.
The park would include a 1.5-acre sculpture garden featuring Seuss characters.
Geisel, an award-winning children’s author, died last year. Some of his most famous books include “The Lorax,” “The Cat in the Hat” and “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.” He was a longtime resident of La Jolla.
