About 20,000 of Bulgaria’s 50,000 miners struck to protest production cutbacks and planned pit closures, the first challenge to the young government’s economic reform efforts. The strike, organized by the Podkrepa (Support) trade union, began in Madan, 160 miles southeast of Sofia, after negotiations between a strike committee and the government broke down.
