UCSD Earns Victory as Hansen Gets to 7-0

Brent Hansen (7-0) scattered seven hits and struck out eight in leading host UC San Diego to a 3-2 victory over Claremont, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday.
UCSD fell behind 2-0, but Dominic Dirksen tied it with a two-homer in the fourth. The Tritons (19-4-1) scored the winning run in the ninth when pinch runner Eric Kuandt scored on a passed ball with no outs. Claremont fell to 15-16.
SOFTBALL
The University of San Diego dropped a nonconference doubleheader against visiting CSU Dominguez Hills, 4-1 and 6-1.
CSUDH held the Toreros to one hit, an RBI double by Aimee Reinard, in the opener. In the second game, Melissa Punch had three triples for CSUDH (28-12). USD is 20-6.
MOEN’S TENNIS
Kerry Safdi was San Diego State’s lone winner as the Aztecs dropped a nonconference match, 5-1, to fourth-ranked USC at Los Angeles. At No. 3 singles, Safdi defeated Andras Lanyi, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).
At No. 4 and No. 5 singles, SDSU’s Michael Sass and Jeff Belloli forced their matches to three sets. SDSU is 15-5; USC is 13-2.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Monica Clancy led Point Loma Nazarene to a shutout against Cal Baptist in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at PLNC. Clancy won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Kim Wright for the victory in the top doubles spot. The Crusaders are 14-5, 4-2 in the GSAC.
HOCKEY
Gulls center Ray Whitney, 19, the second-round pick of the NHL entry draft, signed with the San Jose Sharks a day after the Gulls ended their season with a 2-1 playoff loss to Peoria Monday. The Sharks have games against Calgary and Edmonton remaining.
Whitney joined the Gulls in November after he was released by Team Canada. He played 63 games and scored 36 goals and had 54 assists for 90 points. In the IHL All-Star game, where he was named MVP, Whitney scored a goal and made four assists.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Poway High’s Kelly Arthur has signed a national letter of intent with USD, which will begin its first season of competition this fall. Arthur, a forward-midfielder who is a member of the La Jolla Nomads, was a All-San Diego Section selection this year. USD also signed center midfielder Mindy Campbell of Lake Oswego, Oregon.
