IBM to Unveil New Workstation: IBM today is expected to announce a powerful but relatively low-cost computer that could compete for customers with the company’s multimillion-dollar mainframes. Mainframes and associated equipment are IBM’s most profitable product, a market the company once jealously guarded from competition by its other divisions. The fact that IBM appears to be pitting the new, $98,000 computer workstation against mainframes shows how the world’s largest computer maker is changing its ways under a decentralization plan announced in December. The computer IBM is to unveil today is said to be the fastest of its type in the industry, according to two widely used benchmarks.
