SDSU Wins Offensively, 25-16, at Colorado State

The linescore looked like that of a tee-ball game. San Diego State: 25 runs, 27 hits, nine errors. Colorado State: 16 runs, 13 hits, seven errors.
But the Aztecs gladly took the 25-16 victory at Rams Field in Fort Collins, Colo., Sunday. It kept them atop the Western Athletic Conference baseball standings with a 16-3 record, 34-11 overall.
Derek Vinyard was four for seven with seven RBIs for SDSU, including a three-run home run in the fourth, one of three innings in which the Aztecs scored six runs. Steve Dietz also had four hits, while Rick Page and Marcelino Garcia had three apiece. La Jolla High graduate Gary Frank had three hits for Colorado State, which fell to 18-34, 2-18.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine swept the singles and doubles championships and captured the West Coast Conference team title at the University of San Diego. The Toreros finished second with none of their players reaching the final or consolation rounds.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
USD’s Laura Richards fell to Pepperdine’s Noelle Porter, 6-3, 6-3, in the WCC singles championship at St. Mary’s. Richards and Julie McKeon beat Nina Eriksson and Merete Stockmann of Pepperdine, 7-5, 6-1, for the doubles championship, but the Waves captured the team championship by outscoring the USD, 78-66.
GOLF
The first round of the West Coast Conference Men’s tournament was not completed because of a tee-time delay. Play resumes today at 7 a.m. The players will finish the first round at Torrey Pines South then play the second round at Torrey Pines North.
SAILING
Gerard Coleman of Coronado and Peter Coleman of Rye, N.Y., were in first place after the first of 10 soling division races in the U.S. Olympic Trials at Punta Gorda, Fla. San Diegan Larry Klein and Ron Rosenberg of Long Beach were third.
