BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Cubs’ Dunston to Have Back Surgery

Chicago Cub shortstop Shawon Dunston will undergo back surgery next week and is not expected to play again until September. Dunston, who was batting .315 in 18 games, will have surgery May 13 to repair a herniated disk.
Luis Salazar, Rey Sanchez and Jose Vizcaino are expected to share the shortstop duties unless the Cubs make a trade.
Texas Ranger third base coach Dave Oliver was hit in the head by a ball during batting practice before Wednesday night’s game against Cleveland and sustained a mild concussion.
Oliver was hit in the right forehead by a ball off the bat of Texas utility infielder Al Newman as he stood near the batting cage at Arlington, Tex.
Michigan is investigating the Detroit Tigers for possible child-labor law violations for letting batboys work late hours.
The state Labor Department’s investigation into a 17-year-old student’s complaint that he worked from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. on school nights should be completed by the end of the week, said Harold Lewis, the department’s Detroit Review Investigator.
State law forbids minors over 16 from working between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. on school days.
“They’re not treating people like human beings,” the teen-ager, Dave Bondy of Wayne, told The Detroit News. “I don’t want to be around baseball if I’m going to be treated like that.”
Tiger spokesman Greg Shea said the organization follows federal, rather than state, child labor laws and they place no hourly restrictions on youths over age 16.
