Business Know-How Can Get the Job Done

American business has long been acknowledged for its ability to “get the job done.” In the aftermath of the Los Angeles riots, there is a critical need to develop a reconstruction program that will get the job done. Therefore, why not create a plan that places a major responsibility for this reconstruction directly and clearly on local industry? This could be done by:
--Selecting the 50 major industries in Los Angeles and securing a pledge from each of them for active involvement.
--Working with each to create a specific task to perform.
--Requiring the commitment of their own resources, both capital and personnel. Each participant would have to approach this task as though it were a corporate problem. This would require them to focus resources--money, administrative energy and specific timetables--on the responsibility that they assume.
--With the projects carefully selected and coordinated by the Rebuild L.A. committee, a web of activity could be under way within 90 days that would show citizens everywhere that not only is there concern about critical urban core issues, but that there is a true commitment and a plan for action. This action would be a huge step in moving our City of Angels toward its potential as the great multiethnic capital of the world.
