A Latino man in his 20s, possibly an undocumented immigrant, was struck by a car and fatally injured near the San Onofre Border Patrol checkpoint, authorities said.
The Border Patrol said it learned of the accident about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when a passing motorist reported a body lying on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the checkpoint.
Agents who went to the scene “found the man didn’t have any vital signs, so they administered CPR, and he revived, but later died at the hospital,” said Steven Kean, a spokesman for the Border Patrol.
The man, who carried no identification, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, officials said. He died at 2:47 a.m.
So far this year, there have been five deaths of people evading the Border Patrol at the San Onofre checkpoint.
