At the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany, Sampras and the doubles team of Patrick McEnroe and Jim Grabb gave the United States a 2-1 victory over Russia.

Sampras beat Alexander Volkov, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), and Andrei Cherkasov evened the Blue Group match by defeating Derrick Rostagno, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. McEnroe and Grabb clinched the victory by defeating Volkov and Cherkasov, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-3.

Spain blanked Sweden, 3-0, in the Red Group. Emilio Sanchez, ranked No. 20 in the world, beat No. 2-ranked Edberg, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
