Norwalk : Council to Consider Plan for Trash Pickup Rate Hikes

The Norwalk City Council will have a hearing Tuesday on a proposal by the city’s trash haulers to raise their rates by as much as 15%.
Consolidated Disposal Service and Jackson Disposal Service want to increase trash pickup rates for the city’s 27,247 homes and apartments by 15%, while raising rates 10% for businesses, said Dan Keen, deputy city manager. Most residents now pay $31.42 quarterly, Director of Finance Jim Weber said.
City officials also will decide whether to change the way they bill residential customers.
The city now bills residents quarterly. But under a new proposal, the City Council would authorize Los Angeles County to include a charge on property tax bills twice a year.
The move would allow Norwalk to save more than $80,000 a year in billing costs, Keen said.
The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 12700 Norwalk Blvd.
