Hospital Disrupted as Man Vomits Pesticides

BAKERSFIELD — The emergency room at Kern Medical Center was shut down for more than three hours Friday as a precaution after a patient vomited pesticides he apparently had swallowed in a suicide attempt.
At least five people, including two sheriff’s deputies, were exposed to malathion and chlordane, said Kern County Fire Capt. Mark Chaffin.
However, no one was injured except the man who swallowed the chemicals, hospital spokeswoman Karen Grimm said. That man, whose name was unavailable, was reported in stable condition.
“The only reason we did close down the (emergency room) was to keep traffic from coming in and out,” she said. “None of the employees was evacuated.”
