Rules Now Reversed

Is it only I who recognizes the gross incongruity in many news stories? Am I the only one appalled?
In The Times we read that our city must pay the families of four criminals $44,000. These are bandits, caught at the scene of the crime and suspected of participating in “a string of restaurant robberies,” who pointed guns at the police.
I know that excessive force is sometimes used by police, but this is different. Criminals with guns were committing a robbery. The police not only behaved properly, but saved the taxpayers the $30,000 to $40,000 it would have cost to maintain each criminal in prison each year.
It infuriates me that my taxes are used to apologize for clever police work.
