AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Nickens Lifts Valley North to 7-2 Victory Over Newhall

Brandon Nickens gave up three hits and two runs (one earned) through seven innings Saturday in pitching Valley North to a 7-2 American Legion District 20 baseball victory over Newhall-Saugus.
Mike Muir had three hits and scored two runs, Mike Garbo had two hits, and Mark Lopez added a two-run single for Valley North (18-3-1).
Valley North touched Newhall-Saugus starter Jamie Ray (5-2) for eight hits and seven runs (five earned) in five innings as Nickens improved to 2-0.
In other District 20 games:
Van Nuys-Notre Dame 12, Sun Valley 0--David Supple gave up one hit in four innings in his first start for Van Nuys-Notre Dame (21-2). Louie Tapia had two hits and three runs batted in for Van Nuys-Notre Dame.
Granada Hills West 14, Woodland Hills East 4 (five innings)--Brian Basowski and Gary Matthews each had three hits and two RBIs to lead a 14-hit attack for Granada Hills West in a game called after five innings at Taft High.
Heath McElwee and Dave Cipolla contributed two hits and two RBIs for Granada Hills West (16-5).
Verdugo Hills 11, Panorama City 1 (eight innings)--J.R. Workman had five hits, including a triple and double, and drove in two runs for Verdugo Hills (19-3) in a game shortened to eight innings.
Winning pitcher John Jackson (2-0) gave up six hits and one earned run in eight innings.
Glendale 5, West Hills 4 (11 innings)--Jason McLean had five hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for West Hills (7-14). Joel Orme (2-4) went the distance for West Hills, allowing four earned runs and striking out five.
Las Virgenes 17, Reseda-Cleveland 9 (five innings)--Brian Bruskrud had three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in eight runs for Las Virgenes (9-13).
Five batters were hit by pitches, and the game was shortened to five innings after tempers flared on both sides.
Quartz Hill 12, North Hollywood 0 (seven innings)--Kevin O’Malley had two hits for North Hollywood (10-12) in a game shortened to seven innings. Damon Lapa (3-3) gave up 11 runs in 4 2/3 innings and took the defeat.
Woodland Hills West 1, San Fernando 0 (forfeit)--San Fernando forfeited to Woodland Hills West (17-5) because of a lack of players.
DISTRICT 16 Camarillo B 7, Newbury Park B 4--Jay Nirenberg and Jake Spahr each had two hits and two runs batted in, and Matt Buttell added two hits for Camarillo B (13-8). Paul Bonds (3-2) pitched a one-hitter through five innings for Camarillo B.
