CAMP PENDLETON — Two women Marines were shot several times each outside a barracks Sunday by a gunman who then shot himself in the head, base officials said.
The gunman, who apparently had a relationship with one of the women, died at Camp Pendleton’s hospital, said Lt. Kevin Bentley.
He was a former Marine who had been stationed at the northern San Diego County base until his recent discharge. His name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
Both women, neither of whom was identified, initially were taken to the base hospital, but subsequently were transferred to civilian hospitals.
The women were roommates and are attached to the 1st Force Service Support Group. The shootings occurred outside a barracks that houses personnel from that group, Bentley said. Military police recovered a 10mm semiautomatic pistol used by the gunman, he said.
