ST. PAUL, Minn. — State Auditor Mark Dayton, who slashed his $65,437 salary to $1 last year to help balance his $6-million budget, got a surprise when he opened his paycheck.
The 45-year-old heir to the Dayton department store fortune found his annual check was for just 81 cents. The state subtracted 10 cents in taxes and 9 cents in other deductions.
“The government is always watching,” Dayton quipped. The $1 keeps him on the state payroll. He also receives health and pension benefits.
