Cuba, in search of a medal after boycotting the last two Games, defeated the Netherlands, 15-12, 17-15, 6-15, 15-10. World champion Italy rallied to defeat France, 9-15, 15-5, 15-8, 15-2.
Brazil, also a medal contender, beat South Korea, 15-13, 16-14, 15-7; Spain edged Canada, 13-15, 15-7, 9-15, 15-12, 15-13; and the Unified Team defeated Algeria, 15-8, 15-7, 15-4.
