Pete Sampras, headed for Barcelona as a member of the U.S. Olympic team, got a confidence boost when he beat Alberto Mancini in the final of the Philips Head Cup tournament at Kitzbuhel, Austria.
It was Sampras’ first victory on clay, the surface at Barcelona, and he needed only 1 hour 49 minutes to beat the seventh-seeded Argentine, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.
Sampras’ victory was the ninth in his career and gave him at least one victory on all three tennis surfaces.
