SAN DIEGO : Car Hits, Kills Man Running on Freeway

A 23-year-old National City man was struck and killed by a van early Monday morning as he ran toward the center divider on Interstate 5 north of the Interstate 15 under-crossing, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Carlos Javier Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene, a county medical examiner’s spokesman said. He was struck by 64-year-old Francisco Yarza of San Diego.
Chavez’s mother lives in Tijuana, but officials say he had a California identification card.
“We don’t really have any idea just yet” why he was crossing the freeway, CHP spokesman Mark Gregg said.
