Neighbors heard her screams at 5:18 a.m. Sunday and called police, authorities said. Officers found her unconscious in a breezeway outside her apartment in the 4700 block of Calle las Positas, Sgt. Bill Krunglevich said.
She was taken to the hospital by Life Flight helicopter, he said.
At 9:15 p.m. Sunday, 26-year-old Arthur Hughes was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, mayhem and sexual assault, Krunglevich said. Police were about to search his parents’ home, in the 4900 block of Roja Street, when Hughes tried to flee, he said.
