UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council called Monday for an urgent airlift to supply relief aid to Somalia, where more than a million people face starvation.
In a resolution, adopted by a unanimous 15-0 vote, the council prepared the way for a substantially expanded U.N. operation in the Horn of Africa country.
The resolution follows a week of accusations by Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali that the council paid far less attention to urgent needs in Africa than to the so-called “rich man’s war” in the former Yugoslav federation.
