A San Diego man was ordered to stand trial Friday for allegedly committing a hate crime against a Latino child who was playing behind his house.
Clark Marcell (Pete) Hill, 25, will be arraigned in Superior Court on Aug. 18. He is charged with one felony count of assault and one felony hate crime.
According to testimony at Hill’s preliminary hearing, two people heard him say “I’m going to shoot a Mexican” just before he fired a BB gun at a 7-year-old playing in an alley behind his Swift Street house.
Prosecutors say the shot hit the child, who was playing with two friends. The BB entered the child’s back and remains lodged near his spine, but doctors hope to remove it soon.
Hill is free on his own recognizance.
