Shortstop David Lamb had four hits and scored three runs as Newbury Oaks defeated Van Nuys-Notre Dame, 10-4, to win the American Legion Area 6 baseball tournament at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday.
The win was the 27th in a row for Newbury Oaks (27-1), which advanced to the six-team state tournament to be held Aug. 8-11 in Yountville, Calif.
Trailing, 3-0, after five innings, Newbury Oaks scored two runs in the top of the sixth to narrow its deficit to one, and added a pair in the seventh to take the lead.
Jamal Nichols tripled in teammate Mike Moore to tie the score, 3-3, in the seventh and scored the go-ahead run when the relay throw to the infield went awry.
Newbury Oaks added a run in the eighth, then blew the game open with a five-run outburst in the ninth that included Trent Martin’s two-run home run.
Chris Garza and Francisco Dongo had two hits each for Van Nuys (29-5). The left-handed Garza held Newbury Oaks to two hits in the first five innings, but he could not pitch after that because he had reached the maximum number of innings pitched (12) allowed during the previous 72-hour period.
