COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Chico Walker hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and minor leaguer Bobby Jones gave up one hit in seven innings as the New York Mets defeated the Chicago White Sox, 3-0, Monday in the 47th annual Hall of Fame game.
The White Sox and Mets went 6 1/3 innings before getting a hit. Jones was perfect until minor leaguer Byron Mathews reached base on a bad-hop single to center.
Jones, a No. 1 draft pick from Fresno State who is playing for the double-A Binghamton Mets, struck out six and walked none before winner Mike Freitas of the Class-A Port St. Lucie Mets relieved to start the eighth.
Walker homered to center against loser Scott Ruffcorn, also a minor leaguer, and Daryl Boston added a two-run double.
Minor leaguer Jason Bere pitched five hitless innings for the White Sox.
