When Kim Zmeskal fell during her gymnastics routine, the reverberations could be felt all the way back to Madison Avenue. But what can be gained by all of us with her defeat? Perhaps a greater appreciation of what the Olympics should represent--the glory of participation; satisfaction in knowing you have done your best.

Zmeskal may have fallen because of her inability to overcome the enormity of the moment. Or maybe she was caught looking ahead to those financial rewards that a gold medal might have brought. It’s all academic now. If the goal had not been as high, the fall might not have been as great.
