MESA, Ariz. — Former Gov. Evan Mecham is off and running again, this time as an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Mecham told about 400 supporters at a rally Wednesday that he will run for the Senate seat held by Republican John McCain if he can qualify for the November ballot.
Mecham must collect 10,555 voters’ signatures to qualify.
Mecham, 68, was elected governor in 1986 and impeached less than two years later. He was convicted of misusing a state protocol fund and of obstructing a police investigation.
He attempted to regain the office in 1990 but lost in the Republican primary.
